South Jersey is close to the major metropolitan Philadelphia, often called the "Birthplace of America" and referred to as the "new Athens" early in its existence; indeed, it is the birthplace of America's modern democracy. The city's name translates to "City of Brotherly Love" and has been a seat of freedom since its inception. An academic city known for its historical roots, it is home to some of the top schools and universities in the nation, including Ivy Leagues like the University of Pennsylvania and nearby Princeton University. Philadelphia also offers endless and exciting city nightlife, but with access to upscale suburbs just a short drive away. Other areas within driving distance are New York City, Washington DC, New Jersey (including Atlantic City), and the Delaware beaches.
